Chapter 14

Aubri immediately answered Nick’s texts, after reading that there was a new victim. She, Fen, Aria, and Bastian were the first ones to make it to the crime scene, watching Nick wrap himself in his arms while another man, presumably Dr. Maximus Crispin, paced around nervously in the hall just outside the office, muttering words under his breath, trying to hold back tears.

“Nick?” Bastian ran over to Nick, wincing at the sight of Dr. Bisette’s corpse before pulling Nick into a tight embrace. “Are you okay? What happened?”

“We were talking. But then she just went to her office to make a call, so I was so occupied talking with Dr. Crispin and...Someone slit her throat while she was here.” Nick mumbled, keeping his head buried in Bastian’s chest. “They...locked the door from the inside, so Dr. Crispin had to pick the lock, and...”

“That’s...” Aubri turned to see Fen stutter, wrapping her arms around herself as she looked away, visibly shuddering. “That’s the same way they found Joanna in the luggage, on that train last year!”

“Joanna?” Bastian raised a brow, looking towards Fen. “Who is she?”

Fen glanced back at him, swallowing. “One of the past victims. Former friend of mine.” A sigh left her as she shook her head once. “Her corpse was stuffed into luggage and placed on a train. We thought she was expelled after bullying incidents here at the school, but...”

“Except this time,” Aubri looked towards the bloody mess on the floor, and then up at Fen, “they didn’t have time to stuff Dr. La Bisette on a train.” Hence the closet.

Nick forced himself inhale deeply, before he looked towards Aubri, wriggling out of Bastian’s arms. “Whoever did it...the murder was a sloppy job. Th-they knew they had limited time to get in and out, but Bisette probably fought them until her last breath.” Nick managed. “And whoever killed her knew to lock the door on the inside, so it would be harder for anyone to go into the office. If it wasn’t for Dr. Crispin picking the lock,” He looked towards Crispin, who stood outside in the hallway, leaning back against the wall with his head hung, “We wouldn’t get in there to see it.”

“Either the criminal is really observant with doors,” Aubri heard Bastian mutter, “Or it’s someone who works here. Maybe even a student.”

Aubri swallowed. “S-so...it’s an inside job for sure then? All these murders?”

The murderer really is part of this school?

Before anyone else could speak up, someone else did.

“Excuse me? Please move out of the way – huh?”

Nick whirled around to see a woman. She was familiar from the casino car of that engagement party train, as far as Aubri remembered. Light brown skin, dark hair and eyes, and her voice was certainly recognizable.

“Wait...Rhonda?” Nick blurted out, his head snapping towards her. “Is that you?”

Rhonda raised a brow. The neat uniform of someone attending a casino car of a train was replaced by a campus security uniform. Aubri knew that the train station
